It started with more of a whimper than a bang. Rishi Sunak’s surprise election announcement was marred by torrential rain and a protester blasting Labour’s classic 1997 campaign. Things can only get better. But things haven’t improved for Sunak since then.
From Steve Baker going on holiday to Lucy Allen backing a reform candidate, his MPs did not all agree, while Michael Gove surprised many by joining the large number of Tory MPs in saying they would not stand. Senior political correspondent for The Guardian Peter Walker says that while not disastrous, it’s certainly far from the smooth, slippery start that Sunak would have liked for his campaign.
