Wedge Island fire: At least two firefighters injured battling blaze, one with serious burns

Two firefighters have been treated for injuries while battling an out-of-control bushfire, with one airlifted to a Perth hospital with serious burns.
One male firefighter is understood to have suffered serious burns while another sustained injuries while on the fire in an area around Wedge Island, Kuljarlo and Nambung on Wednesday.
The area is currently in an emergency alert zone, with the fire remaining out of control and not contained.

St John WA were called to the suburb of Cataby to treat one person, believed to be a male firefighter, just before 12pm.
The firefighter, aged in his 60s, was then taken by ambulance to the Gingin Oval.
He has since been admitted to Fiona Stanley Hospital’s burns unit after being airlifted from Gingin by the RAC rescue helicopter.
The firefighters’ injuries are known to be serious but not life-threatening. The condition of the firefighter at the hospital remains unknown.
The second firefighter, who is also believed to have been burned in the fire, did not require an ambulance because his injuries were minor. He was treated by paramedics at the scene.
Incident controller Andrew Duckworth told the ABC the fire was sparked by a car crash on Monday morning before engulfing nearby bushland. The Fire and Emergency Service said the fire was first reported at 10.54am.
Cervantes Elementary School is on lockdown and residents in the emergency zone are urged to evacuate to a safer location.
More than 60 firefighters – including both professional and volunteer – battled the blaze on Wednesday.
Air support, including water bombers, also attempted to extinguish the flames as they moved in a northeasterly direction.
People in the Wedge, which stretches inland to Indian Ocean Drive and north to Bibby Road, including parts of Nambung National Park at Wedge Island, Cooljarloo and Nambung, are being told to leave now if the road is clear.
After some delay on Wednesday, the fire was again upgraded to an emergency level due to changing conditions.
The evacuation center is on site at the Jurien Bay Sports and Leisure Centre.
Road closures in the area include Indian Ocean Drive between Ocean Place and Cervantes Road, Munbinea Road at Cervantes Road, Bibby Road at Brand Highway and Meadows Road at Mimegarra Road.
There were no reported structural losses related to the fire.
