Political parties usually run someone new when they try to oust an incumbent – but that’s not the case this year. To the Guardian Alice Herman took a trip down memory lane to explore what happened the last time anything like the Trump-Biden rematch took place:
When Joe Biden and Donald Trump secured enough delegates to lead the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries in November, they confirmed what many voters expected but fewer wanted: an overhaul of Elections in 2020.
Republicans, skeptical of giving Trump a second chance, tried in vain to field a viable primary opponent. Powerful donors, including the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity Action, have poured money into the campaign of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, but Haley has been unable to wring enough support from Trump to pose a threat to the former president.
So for the first time in more than 50 years, the Republican Party will renominate a candidate who has already lost a general election for president – the last time that happened was in 1968, when Richard Nixon, who had lost the general election for president in 1960 , ran again and won.
It’s been even longer since a presidential candidate faced a real rematch.

Several hundred are protestingers have taken over a street corner across from the I-85 connector in downtown Atlanta.
Most called for an end to American involvement in Gaza war and for the president – or his successor – to call for an immediate ceasefire.
The protest at 10th and West Peachtree was organized by the Atlanta chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.
“We join 15 other organizations that are united in solidarity with the Palestinian people,” he said Nate Knauf, a DSA organizer in Atlanta. “We call on both the main presidential candidates, Biden and Trump, to support a free Palestine, to support an immediate ceasefire to end all military aid to Israel, to force Israel to end the genocide in Gaza. We know that the President of the United States has the power to end genocide.
A second protest is brewing closer to Turner studios across the highway. The organizer of this event is unclear; Knauf said his group was not involved.
Supporters of Robert Kennedy Jr were also engaged in a protest at the site, along with members of Peta, police accountability organizations and others.
Recently, Republicans have been claiming, without evidence, that Biden will take some kind of performance-enhancing drug to get through the debate.

He had been at a nearby hotel for the last few hours before meeting with Donald Trump.
One question that will be on the minds of many viewers tonight: who will be donald trump’s opponent?
Trump is expected to make the announcement anytime between now and the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which begins on July 15.

He said his main consideration for a vice president is whether they are qualified to take over as commander-in-chief. But history shows that he will have five priorities: “fighter” who can run against the Democrats; a person who shows absolute loyalty; a “central casting” candidate who performs well on television and would be effective on the debate stage against Kamala Harris; a number two who knows his place and will not overshadow it in the campaign; an upstart capable of raising huge sums of money for the campaign.

Trump and Biden are looking for a breakthrough in the deadlocked race
A sense of stalemate has gripped the presidential race so far: Polls for months have shown a very tight race between Trump and Biden, as well as an unusually low level of enthusiasm for both candidates among the voting public.

This could be the moment when the rematch few seem to want finally comes to life: as two aging fighters, Joe Biden and Donald Trump will step into the political bloodsport arena on Thursday night to resume a verbal sparring that will revive memories of ugly exchanges when the two discussed face to face four years ago.
A CNN studio in Atlanta will host the first presidential debate of the campaign between the same two candidates who competed in the last election, which Biden won.
With more than four months until Election Day in November, that’s the earliest in the US presidential campaign that a debate between the two main candidates was ever staged.
While some believe the timing is premature, it could provide a chance to open up a race that has been overshadowed by, among other things, Trump’s recent felony conviction and various other legal hurdles facing him 54 criminal charges for trying to overturn the last election and for keeping classified documents.

The debate has not started, but the centrifuge is already spinning
We’re still more than an hour away from the start of CNN’s presidential debate in Atlanta, but variously dressed, well-coiffed, it seems all the male politicians are already in the network-created room where they’re…well, they’re spinning reporters.
We’re talking about people like the Democratic governor of California Gavin Newsomwho is believed to be a presidential candidate someday:

No audience, muted microphones and commercial breaks: the rules and quirks of tonight’s debate
There are several aspects of this debate that are different from previous meetings between Biden and Trump, which were organized by the non-profit Commission on Presidential Debates.
For this election, the two campaigns chose to ditch the nonprofit and attend an event hosted by CNN, and the network’s rules are slightly different than in previous years.
For one thing, there will be two commercial breaks during the event, but Biden and Trump staffers can’t interact with them while the cameras are off (one wonders if there will be small talk between the two adversaries).
And then there’s the fact that CNN’s control room has the option to mute one man’s microphone if he interrupts the other — which could change things for Trump, in particular, since he likes to talk to people.
Finally, there will be no studio audience, meaning if Trump or Biden manage to land or fail a line, you won’t hear cheers, gasps or laughter.

When and how to join the debate
The presidential debate begins at 9:00 PM ET and takes place at CNN’s studios in Atlanta.

Good evening, readers of an American political blog. All eyes are on the CNN studios in Atlanta tonight where Donald Trump and Joe Biden will hold the first of two debates scheduled before the Nov. 5 presidential election. Surveys show that candidates are almost neck to neck in the race for the White House and that many Americans are not happy that he has to settle for a rematch from the 2020 election, where Biden defeated Trump. Since then, the Democratic president has seen his job approval plummet as Trump faces criminal charges four separate timesas one of these cases leads to his belief 34 crimes last month. There will be plenty to see in tonight’s 90-minute showdown, but both campaigns are hoping for one particular event: a breakthrough moment that captures the public’s attention and gives either Trump or Biden another boost. We’ll see if that happens.

Make no mistake: Biden can sometimes still gave a good speech. But at 81, he is also the oldest president to ever serve and is trend to confuse his words and mix up the facts. Will it undermine him on the debate stage?

Trumpwho at 78 is just as old can also fail when it comes to making a speech – just look at how he I was struggling after he was convicted in his secret money trial in New York last month. How can he stand up to Biden, who always strives to stick to the message?

The format of this debate is unique in several ways in that CNN is hosting instead of the nonprofit Commission on Presidential Debates, which was rejected from both campaigns. There will be commercial breaks, for example, and in a break from previous Biden-Trump meetings in 2020, when then-Pres. did him no favors, CNN has the power to turn off their microphones if they start arguing. What can this lead to when the two men who don’t like each other at all are in the same room for the first time in four years?
