Trump refuses to commit to accepting election loss and repeats 2020 lies at Wisconsin rally

yesterday, Donald Trump had the day off from his trial in New York on charges related to falsifying business records and held a rally in Wisconsin, a swing state critical to his presidential chances. After a speech spent on attack Joe Biden on how he’s handling border security and inflation, Trump gave an interview to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, in which he falsely insisted he won Wisconsin in 2020 (he didn’t) and “other places,” and refused to commit to accepting the results of this year’s vote.

“If all is fair, I will gladly accept the results. I’m not changing that. If it is not, you must fight for the right of the country,” said the former president.

The comments were another indication that Americans should be prepared for dire election consequences if Trump loses in November to Biden. After the Democrat beat him in 2020, Trump spent weeks attempts at different plots to prevent Biden from taking power, culminating in the attack on the Capitol on January 6. Of course, there is a chance that Trump could actually win the election again, as he did in 2016 – the polls are currently pointing to tight race with Biden, including in Wisconsin.

Here’s what else is happening today:

  • Trump returns to Manhattan as his trial resumes with testimony from Keith Davidsonadult film actor attorney Stormy Daniels, which is the basis of the charges against the former president. We have live blog coverage everything that happens in the courtroom.

  • The police intervened against protesters at the University of California, Los Angeles, as colleges across the country grapple with anti-Israel demonstrations. I follow our live blog for more on this developing story.

  • Biden heads to North Carolina to pay his respects the four law enforcement officers killed while running errands earlier this week, he will then speak on his economic policy in the city of Wilmington at 4:30 p.m. ET.

Biden says no plans to change Middle East policies, calls in National Guard in response to protests

Joe Biden spoke for only three minutes before ending.

Just after he finished, a reporter asked if the protests would cause him to reconsider any of his policies in the Middle East.

“No,” the president replied.

Another asked if he planned to send the National Guard to universities affected by the demonstrations, as some have a republican legislators have called for.

“No,” was Biden’s response.

Biden says ‘violent protest isn’t protected, peaceful protest is’ in response to college demonstrations

Joe Biden tried to draw a fine line between peaceful protests, which he says are protected by law, and violent demonstrations in his remarks at the White House amid widespread pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses.

“In America, violent protest is not protected. It’s a peaceful protest,” the president said.

“Violence is against the law. Destruction of property is not peaceful protest. This is against the law. Vandalism, trespassing, window breaking, campus closings, forced cancellation of classes and degrees. None of this is peaceful protest. Threatening people, intimidating them, instilling fear in people is not a peaceful protest. It’s against the law.”

Joe Biden began his speech, which he said would address the recent anti-Israel protests on college campuses.

We’ll let you know what he says.

Joe Biden is often late to start his speeches.

The one scheduled to start at 10.30am appears to be no different.

Biden to address campus protests in unscheduled speech – report

NBC News reports that the topic of Joe BidenThe surprise White House address will be the anti-Israel protests that have taken place on college campuses across the country:

New: President Biden is expected to address growing protests on college campuses across the country when he speaks from the Roosevelt Room soon in unscheduled remarks, multiple sources say @mikememoli & I

The White House announced this at 10.29 am Joe Biden will make an unscheduled speech at 10.30am – one-minute warning.

But the president was already 10 minutes late.

The speech is already unusual because of its short notice and the lack of details from the White House about what the president is talking about.

Biden will make an unscheduled speech from the White House

The White House just announced this Joe Biden will be making remarks soon, but the topic has not been specified.

The speech was not scheduled in advance. We’ll let you know what the president has to say.

Donald Trump’s rally in Wisconsin yesterday was part of a short campaign trip through two swing states that will be crucial to the November election. The Guardian’s David Smith documented the former president’s appearance at the Michigan farm:

At a remote rural airport in Michigan, a huge plane landed as music from the Tom Cruise movie Top Gun blared from the speakers. The late afternoon sunlight glinted off the five giant gold letters on the side of the plane – “TRUMP” – and its Rolls-Royce engines. A red-clad crowd roared as the plane taxied to a stop behind a blue “TRUMP” chair.

A door opened and men with dark glasses and dark suits of what Donald Trump what they would call “central casting” made their way down the stairs. “Trump! Trump!” chanted the crowd, raising hundreds of camera phones in eager anticipation. Great Balls of Fire, Macho Man and YMCA blasted. Finally, the former and future president emerged, clapping and waving his fists to cheers and cheers and Lee Greenwood’s God Bless the USA.

How different a warm hug is from Trump’s recent experience as a criminal defendant in a cold, dirty New York courtroom. In those days, threatened with prison, he looks old, vulnerable and small. Back on the campaign trail, it’s all about hyper-masculine energy and grandeur—big plane, big crowds, big promises and big lies.

Trump had spent Tuesday in the now grimly familiar courtroom routine, where he was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal the payment of hush money to adult film performer Stormy Daniels. But court was out of session on Wednesday, freeing him to receive a fresh dose of praise from his fans.

Trump refuses to address Wisconsin’s abortion ban in emerging swing state

asked the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Donald Trump for his thoughts on Wisconsin’s abortion banwhich is being challenged before the state supreme court, where liberal justices recently won a majority.

The former president declined to comment and instead avoided the question altogether at his rally in Waukesha repeating that he thinks it should be up to states to regulate the procedure, the Journal Sentinel reports.

Trump was instrumental in the Supreme Court’s rejection of Roe v. Wade in 2022, which paved the way for states to ban the procedure entirely, but has since fueled a string of Democratic victories in state and federal elections. He appointed three of the conservative justices who signed that decision, but has since tried to avoid campaigning heavily on the abortion issue.

yesterday, Kamala Harris traveled to Florida to denounce a strict abortion ban that took effect there and warned voters not to believe Trump’s insistence that he is not interested in passing a federal law cutting off access to the procedure. Here is a summary of her speech:
