A 52-year-old man behind the wheel of the lorry was “very lucky” to escape with minor injuries and was taken to Kingaroy Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing, Acting Inspector Brett Everest said.
He said he would not “speculate” on the cause of the crash, but said the road was wet.
The Queensland Ambulance Service said there was “heavy fog” in the area at the time of the crash.
“The message would be that everyone should drive according to the conditions … whether it’s at night, wet roads, foggy roads,” Everest said.
He said the family of the three victims, who came from the nearby town of Bui, had been notified of their deaths.
7NEWS spoke with family members Thursday who are too grief-stricken to speak publicly.
“This will have a ripple effect in the local community,” Everest said.
The highway remained closed throughout the day, with local diversions in place while forensics searched the area.
