Security, the Green Deal and the digital agenda are on voters’ minds, says a leading Danish Social Democrat
Christel Chaldemosea leading candidate for the Danish Social Democrats, named security, environmental policies and control of technology companies as campaign issues.
“Honestly, it depends on who you talk to,” she said in a telephone interview.
“But in general I think the security situation, because of the war in Ukraine and the geopolitical changes, is a big topic – what can we do in the EU… Denmarkwe discuss how to finance weapons and ammunition, how to produce them, etc.,” she said.
“Also, I think the green agenda is a hot topic in Denmark, the bottom line from both candidates and citizens is that we want the EU to continue to focus on the Green Deal and have a high level of ambition. So we are discussing how to do that and what are the consequences of the far right being bigger, will it have an impact on the Green Deal,” she added.
Chaldemose, who works on the EU’s digital agenda, also noted that “I feel that many citizens are interested in learning how we can protect children and minors when they are online on social media.”
Key events
The Danish Social Democrats, who sit with the Socialists and Democrats group in the European Parliament, are currently the most popular party in Denmarkaccording to public opinion polls.
Asked about speculation that the centre-right in the European Parliament would open up to more cooperation with hard-right parties, Christel Chaldemosethe leading candidate of the Danish Social Democrats, expressed hope that the center-right European People’s Party (EPP) would anchor in the center.
“I am concerned, especially about the green agenda and I really hope that it will be possible to convince the EPP not to join forces with the right but instead to go together with the pro-European parties and make sure that we have a stable majority in parliament,” she said.
Asked how different this campaign was compared to previous ones, Chaldemose, who has been a member of the European Parliament since 2006, said every campaign is different, recalling that in the 2004 campaign there was “a different kind of optimism around the EU project . “
“And the last time in ’19, I remember, especially when we were talking about Brexit and the consequences of Brexit – and in Denmarkit was a huge topic – and it led to a more EU-friendly environment in the election campaign,” she added.
What do the polls say about Denmark?
Ann survey by Voxmeter at the end of May found the Social Democrats ahead by about 20%.
The Liberal Alliance follows with 15%.
