A treasure hunter struggling with faulty equipment has unearthed a gold nugget believed to be the largest ever found in England.
Richard Brock discovered the 64.8g gold nugget in the Shropshire Hills in the countryside near the Welsh border, auction house Little Jones said today.
The nugget is about the size of a British 50 pence coin.
The find, dubbed Hiro’s Nugget, is estimated to be worth between £30,000 ($57,800) and £40,000 ($77,065), according to Shropshire-based Mulloch Jones, which is handling the sale.
However, luck seemed to have eluded Brock, whose equipment almost failed him on the day of the dig.
When Brock arrived at the Shropshire site in May, he discovered his metal detector was faulty, according to a press release from Mullock Jones.
When his hopes dimmed, he turned to older equipment.
At first he only found a coin of small value, but after five minutes he made the shocking discovery, the auction house said.
“It just goes to show that it doesn’t really matter what equipment you use, if you walk over the find and are alert enough to what might be hiding under the soil, that makes all the difference,” Brock said in the release.
The auction ends on April 1st.
