A week after the accident, which left his future uncertain, people close to him say he is making “pretty amazing progress”.
This week, doctors woke the young athlete from an induced coma and he was taken off a ventilator.
He even communicates with hand signals, such as “thumbs up is the coolest.”
“He was struggling to speak because of all the trauma from the different ventilators and tubes that were put down his throat, but he asked what happened and (his parents) told him,” family friend BJ Arriasa said in an update on GoFundMe on Wednesday.
“They asked him who is in his team picture and he can name them.”
Ariasa said Joshi remembers being visited at a hospital in Bali, proving “how important it is to talk to comatose patients, no matter what stage they are in their journey.”
“Joshi has a very long road to recovery, but he is a fighter. He knows his friends are waiting for him on the field when he’s ready in his own time,” Ariasa said.
The young boy remains in Perth Children’s Hospital.
Joshi was in Bali for a futsal tournament where he was due to play alongside teammates from Cockburn Wolves last weekend.
An online fundraising campaign set up to help the young futsal player’s family with medical costs has now reached $125,000.
Relatives say the family had insurance, but its coverage didn’t provide a safety net in situations like the four-wheeler emergency.
