An immigration detainee who was expected to be released last year appeared in court after allegedly flouting curfew restrictions and tampering with his ankle bracelet.
Kimbengere Gosoge, 42, appeared before Midland Magistrates’ Court in Perth today.
Police allege he breached the terms of his visa between Friday last week and yesterday.
They also claim the man from the East African country of Burundi tampered with his ankle monitoring device.
He is believed to have been released from immigration detention by a Supreme Court ruling in November.
If convicted, the 42-year-old could face a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $94,000 fine.
He will be back in court in two weeks.
Dozens of detainees held by the Australian government were released last year after the High Court ruled that indefinite detention was illegal.
The government, which contested the ruling in court, was forced to enact curfews and monitoring laws in response.
