A convicted murderer who stabbed a mother-of-three to death over $50 has been granted permission to be released from a Victorian jail to undergo IVF treatment.
Alicia Schiller has received special permission to leave the Dame Phyllis Frost Center to undergo IVF to conceive another child.
The Allen government said a 2010 Supreme Court decision provides a pathway for inmates to access infertility treatment while serving a prison sentence.
It says inmates receiving treatment must privately fund their care, including transport and escort costs.
Shadow prisons minister Brad Battin said Schiller was not fit to be a mother while serving a sentence for murder.
“In what world would this convicted murderer be considered a suitable mother while still in prison serving a long sentence for a stabbing over a $50 debt?” Battin said.
Victorian Prisons Minister Enver Erdogan said the decision raised questions about appropriate access to health services in prison.
“I think what is appropriate medical care and the broader ethical questions about welfare are good questions for a doctor to consider,” he said.
The Crime Victims Commissioner told 9News he does not comment on individual matters.
