A serious refueling problem at Perth Airport has caused the cancellation of at least 59 international and domestic flights, causing chaos for thousands of passengers who are now stranded.
The refueling issue is affecting outbound and some inbound flights, a Perth Airport spokesman confirmed.
It is not known how many longer flights will be affected as experts continue to work to resolve the issue.
“The problem has resulted in a loss of pressure in the refueling system,” a Perth Airport spokesman said.
“We have outside experts working on potential solutions and are exploring every option to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
The problem means planes arriving at the airport are unable to refuel and fly to the Western Australian city.
“We understand this has been a difficult and frustrating morning for passengers and our airline partners,” the spokesman said.
“We apologize for the disruption and thank them for their continued patience.
“Passengers are still urged to contact their airlines for information about their flights.”
A spokesman earlier said airlines had been advised not to send planes to Perth Airport until further notice unless they had enough fuel for a return flight.
9News confirmed that hundreds of passengers were affected, many of whom said they wanted to be compensated because the ordeal cost them thousands of dollars.
Perth Airport’s online departure board shows the first flight affected is a Singapore Airlines flight to Singapore that was scheduled to depart at 1:10am.
