In just his third season, the classy left-footer came from the clouds in the count, receiving 22 of a possible 30 votes in the last 10 games of the season.
And took it to a new level again in 2024, averaging 26 disposals and 576 yards per game.
His ability to cut through teams with laser-like kicking makes him a weapon for the Swans, who are a game-and-a-half clear at the top of the ladder and favorites in the Premier League.
Anyone who has watched him play can see that he kicks well, but Johnson took it a step further.
“It caught my eye years ago, like everyone else in the football world,” the Western Bulldogs great said of Gulden’s kicking ability.
“Watching him again against the Bulldogs last weekend, I just sat in awe, one, how good (his kicking) looks, but (two), how effective it is and what angle he can use that left foot.
“The goal he scored, for example, was just sensational.
“It just made me think: is he the best left-footed player we’ve ever seen?
“Technically, the way he looks, the impact of his kicks and how good he is at breaking the opposition with that left foot back through (the) corridor, the long switch and how quickly his kicks get to where we need to get to .”
Johnson’s host Adam White agreed that what Gulden does with his left foot is special.
“Errol Goulden has captured the imagination of a lot of people, I think especially in the last two years,” White said.
“The way he ran home at the Brownlow last year – if anyone didn’t know who he was, they certainly knew it from the Brownlow medal night.
“But he has this amazing left foot.”
Gulden is among the favorites to feature again in this year’s Brownlow Medal and will be crucial as the Swans’ gun for their first premiership since 2012.
