The Princess Royal is in hospital with a head injury and concussion after an accident in which she is believed to have been injured by a horse.
Princess Anne, 73, suffered a concussion and minor injuries believed to have been possibly caused by being headbutted or kicked by a horse at her Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire on Sunday.
She was admitted to hospital for treatment, tests and observation.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Princess Royal has suffered minor injuries and concussion following an incident at Gatcombe Park Estate yesterday evening.
“Her Royal Highness remains in Southmead Hospital, Bristol, as a precaution for observation and a full and speedy recovery is expected.
“The King has been kept closely informed and joins the entire Royal Family in sending their heartiest love and best wishes to the Princess for a speedy recovery.”
Anne is understood to have been in the secure perimeter of the Gatcombe Park estate where she lives when the incident happened.
There were horses nearby and her medical team believed her injuries, believed to be minor head wounds, were consistent with a potential impact from a horse’s head or legs.
The princess is said to be conscious in hospital. Because of the concussion she suffered, the exact details of the incident cannot be ascertained. Ann, who is an Olympic equestrian medalist, was walking, not riding, at the time.
Emergency services were dispatched and after being treated at the scene she was transferred to Southmead Hospital.
Her husband, Admiral Sir Tim Lawrence, and her children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, were all at the estate at the time. Her husband accompanied her to the hospital.
She is expected to be able to return home later this week, but the incident means her scheduled engagements for next week will be postponed.
Anne was due to visit Canada at the end of this week, but on doctors’ advice she will not be traveling now. The plans are being considered in close consultation with the Canadian government to adapt the proposed commitments.
It also means she will not be able to attend the palace banquet on Tuesday for the Japanese state visit.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “Her Royal Highness is recovering well, is in a comfortable condition and has been kept in hospital as a precaution for further observation.”
“Her Royal Highness is receiving appropriate expert care. No further details are being shared at this stage.”
“Her Royal Highness will remain at Southmead Hospital unless or until her medical team recommends otherwise.”
King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince of Wales and Anne’s other siblings, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duke of York, were informed last night.
A palace spokesman said: “On medical advice, Her Royal Highness’ engagements for next week will be postponed. Her Royal Highness sends her apologies to anyone who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.
“The Japanese state visit will go ahead as planned, but unfortunately Her Royal Highness will not be able to attend the state banquet tomorrow.”
