She had 125 stab wounds all over her body, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office in Illinois.
This week, more than 57 years later, James Barbier was arrested for Snyder’s murder.
Barbier was originally arrested in 1966 but was not charged and the case remained unsolved for years before being reopened in December 2022.
A DNA sample identified Barbier as a suspect in the case, and he was arrested Monday at his home in Missouri, according to the state attorney’s office.
In addition to the stab wounds, Snyder was covered in bruises, authorities said.
Barbier, who lived in Gary, Indiana at the time, worked with Snyder’s husband, the state attorney’s office said, and was friends with the couple.
Prosecutors said that on the night of the murder, Barbier returned to his home, where his wife saw cuts and blood on him.
He “seemed nervous” and immediately took off his clothes and put them in the washing machine, prosecutors said.
At Snyder’s funeral, it is noticed that Barbier still has cuts on him.
Barbier was released Thursday on maximum pretrial conditions, according to the state attorney’s office.
Barbier was ordered not to leave Missouri or Illinois, surrender his passport and firearms and must appear in person and by phone twice a month, prosecutors told CNN in an email.
“Although the indictment qualifies for detention, based on the defendant’s age, physical disability, and recent case law on this hotly contested issue of the Pretrial Fairness Act and posing a ‘real and present threat,’ the State does not petition for detention “, the state prosecutor’s office explained.
CNN has not yet determined whether Barbier has retained legal counsel.
Calumet City is located near the Illinois-Indiana border, about 13 miles from Gary.
